drumming secrets

Hi Juan,

2 years ago, I bought a Tama Swingstar and I have problems getting a cool kick sound out of it!

The size is 22" and I use an Aquarian Superkick 3 for the batter and the regular factory front head with the Tama logo. I have tuned other bassdrums so I do have some experience with tuning but this one I can't seem to get right; the sound is not open and it doesn't sound deep either!

Have you got any instructions for me to make my Swingstar sound beautiful, warm and deep? I need to have a cool sound because we are going to record with my band this month, so please help me out if you can!

Hello Boy! 

Great....(for outsiders' info who just dropped by and read this: after placing this question Boy came to participate the Tuning Workshop that I did at Drumworld in the Netherlands) 

As I can remember I used your bassdrum as an example during that workshop and I have taught you how to create a open and deep sound, right? Still happy with the result? It was quite a big difference wasn't it? 

So, for a reference to get a great natural kick sound: Aquarian Force 1 batter and an Aquarian Resonant head on the front....But also a Remo Powerstroke as a batter head and an Ebony Ambassador on the front will do the job of course. And don't make that hole in the front head too big!! The only reason why you put a whole in the front head is to make it possible to place a microphone for recording or live concerts inside the drum. If you are a drummer who just plays at home or you use the drum kit for studio recording only, it is prefereable to leave the front head, tune it right without cutting any whole in it! It will give a much richer and fuller sound. However tuning will be not easier, you really will get a much richer and  "boomy" sound.
